The Writing Center Program
- English 54/254—The Writing Center is a course of study in which students enroll.
- The Writing Center is open to students at all skill levels who need to or would
like to improve their writing and critical thinking skills.
Writing Center curriculum ranges from developmental writing to analytical and
research-based writing. The Writing Center also serves hearing-impaired
students and students with other disabilities.
- Students who enroll in The Writing Center must be able to work independently and to abide by the Writing Center policies.
- English 54/254 course sections are held in The Learning Resource Center at the usual times other classes are offered:
- MWF 8-8:50, 9-9:50, 10-10:50, etc.
- and TTr 8-9:25, 9:30-10:55, etc.
- Each Writing Center section is staffed with English Department faculty, Instructional Assistants, and trained, experienced tutors. In addition, two faculty co-coordinators oversee the program.
- Students can enroll during the registration periods as well as at any time up to the 12th week of the semester.
- When students enroll, they are assigned special “mini- English courses,” called “modules.” These modules give students instruction and practice in various writing skills, such as sentence, paragraph, and essay writing, punctuation, etc. (students DO NOT bring in their work from other classes).
- Modules are worth from .5 to 2 units of Credit/No Credit.
- Module assignment is based upon the student’s ability, needs, previous course work, and educational goals. Students fill out a questionnaire, do a writing sample, and have a brief interview with a Writing Center instructor, all of which help determine the module assignment.
- All module work must be completed in the Writing Center and checked by Writing center staff. Students may NOT do any module work outside of the Center unless they have written permission from a Writing Center instructor.
- Students receive one-on-one assistance from Writing Center instructors, Instructional Assistants and tutors as they progress through their modules. Students can request help at any time simply by signing up on the “Help List.”
- Students can earn from .5 to 3 units of credit based upon the amount of work they complete during the semester. However, students can sign up for only two units at a time (when they complete two units, they can add additional units through the 12th week of the semester).
- The Writing Center is open from
- 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday,
- from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Friday,
- and from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
Students may attend at any time in addition to the section/time they are
enrolled; however, students must see the
instructor of the section in which they are enrolled on a regular basis.
