The Writing Center

|
|
| |
|
|
|
What the Writing Center can do for students:
|
|
|
-
Teach
students techniques that will enable them to write better sentences,
paragraphs, and essays.
-
Help students
improve their knowledge of English grammar, usage, mechanics, and punctuation.
-
Help students
understand and practice the writing process and the steps involved from idea to
final draft.
-
Help students
sharpen their critical thinking especially as it applies to expressing
themselves in writing.
-
Teach
students techniques to generate and organize ideas for writing assignments.
-
Teach
students research techniques and research paper writing techniques, including
citing and compiling sources and research paper formats.
-
Make students
more confident in their ability to express themselves in writing.
-
Provide one-on-one
instruction and assistance and constructive feedback for all work done in the
Writing Center.
-
Allow
students to progress at their own pace.
-
“Customize”
modules to allow students to substitute writing assignments from other classes
across the disciplines for the regular writing assignments in their modules.
-
Provide
access to and operation assistance for Macintosh and Gateway computers in the
Writing Center area of the LRC.

|
What the Writing Center DOES NOT do:
|
|
|
-
The Writing
Center does not assist “drop-in” students. Because we must serve over 400 enrolled students each semester, we are
not able to accommodate students who need “on the spot” help but are not
enrolled in the program. In particular, students cannot get papers checked and errors corrected by Writing Center
staff.
